WHARE ĀKONGA

Mandeno Design was engaged by the Ministry of Education to deliver a new Whare Ākonga at Tauraroa Area School, creating a strong and culturally welcoming focal point within the wharekura.

Positioned front and centre within the school campus, the building’s location was established through the wider masterplan and responds carefully to existing infrastructure and significant site features, including retained tōtara and kōwhai trees — the latter reflected in the school’s identity. A historic stone fence was also preserved, reinforcing the site’s connection to its history and landscape, while framed views to the surrounding maunga further ground the building within its environment.

Replacing an existing asbestos-clad building, the project provides a safe, durable and culturally grounded facility that was delivered ahead of programme and under budget.

Designed as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional whare, the architecture balances cultural identity with the practical needs of a modern learning environment. Early engagement with local hapū helped inform the design process, educating the project team and contributing to a respectful and meaningful architectural response.

A simple gabled form is refined through clean lines and restrained detailing, creating a contemporary architectural language that remains familiar and welcoming. A generous Ātea extends into the entry plaza, supporting formal occasions, everyday use, and wider community connection.

A carefully considered palette of natural timbers defines the building’s arrival sequence. Purpleheart timber lines the fascia and entry columns, while Spotted Gum is used to line the entry walls and soffits. Kwila decking guides movement toward the main entrance, with each material selected not only for durability, but for the way it will weather and age over time, creating a warm and evolving natural palette.

Internally, Macrocarpa timber defines the main portal, establishing a clear sense of entry and focus within the primary space while maintaining warmth and tactility throughout. Carpet tile patterning forms a flowing river through the building, reinforcing cultural narratives and creating a strong visual and spatial connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

The result is a cost-effective, low maintenance and enduring building that has transformed the school’s entrance and identity while creating a lasting space for students, staff and the wider community.

The project demonstrates a careful balance between architectural expression and cost-effective construction, delivering a durable, purposeful building with lasting value. As noted by the school, “This landmark building and associated Ātea has transformed the entrance to our kura.”
